8020 Admin posted a press release Renewed Support for the Matawinie Project in NOUVEAU MONDE GRAPHITE INC.

Nouveau Monde provides update on its social acceptability efforts

SAINT-MICHEL-DES-SAINTS, Quebec, Jan. 28, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a spirit of ethical and responsible development, Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. (“Nouveau Monde” or “NMG”) (TSX.V: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) has launched many initiatives since the discovery of the Matawinie graphite deposit in 2015 to align its project with the context, concerns and values of the local community. The most recent survey conducted by Léger confirms favourable reception of the project in Upper Matawinie, with 82% of respondents calling the project positive or very positive.

This survey follows the one conducted in fall 2018 regarding the community’s opinion about the project. Nouveau Monde mandated Léger to repeat the exercise using the same methodology to measure perceptions of the project over time. The results have remained consistent, with an equivalent rate of support (83% in 2018 and 82% in 2019) and viewpoints that remain positive regarding economic benefits (89%) and community integration with respect to quality of life (76%) and the environment (70%).

“Like any other natural resource, graphite represents a source of collective wealth, and we must take care to develop it with the acceptance and in the interest of the local community and all Quebecers,” said Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO of Nouveau Monde. “In addition to informal discussions with our fellow citizens and partners, the survey results show that we have been able to reconcile social, environmental and economic factors to develop a project that holds promise for the region.”

The survey also indicated that demonstration operations have been deployed in an acceptable way and that the community is sensitive to environmental protection. As a matter of fact, Nouveau Monde's technical team will attend the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement’s (BAPE) public sessions that start tonight in Saint-Michel-des-Saints to answer questions about the project.

Partnerships and progress
In addition to refining the project, open dialogue with the community has helped identify avenues for integration and revealed a strong interest in training, employment and business opportunities. Below is an overview of these initiatives based on the three pillars of sustainable development:

  • Launch of the Mining and Forestry Essentials social and occupational integration program for the Indigenous community, led by the sectoral committee on mining industry labour in collaboration with the Upper Matawinie labour training committee: Nouveau Monde will participate in the Manawan career day on Thursday, January 30 to present the program along with the job and business opportunities associated with the project.

  • In partnership with Scierie St-Michel and La Granaudière, launch of a diploma of vocational studies (DVS) in production equipment operation: The Commission scolaire des Samares will launch the first cohort in spring 2020.

  • Limitation of the project’s impacts within 1 km of the mining site: Nouveau Monde has implemented a proactive voluntary acquisition program to help owners within this radius avoid nuisances due to their proximity to the mining site. So far, agreements have been reached with all landowners in the area who expressed an interest.

  • Maximization of economic benefits in the region through business partnerships, a resolution promoting local procurement, and information meetings for entrepreneurs.

  • Creation of a territory integration plan to ensure that the development of the site is aligned with Saint-Michel-des-Saints’ environment and tourism culture: Nouveau Monde is proposing an eco-adventure park, a graphite interpretation centre with industrial tours, a residential development, and upgrading of spaces within 1 km of the project.

  • Signing of a collaboration and benefit-sharing agreement with the municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Saints and a pre-development agreement with the Atikamekw community.

  • Responsible and low-carbon extraction of graphite in the Tony Block to supply the lithium-ion battery market and support the development of Quebec's transportation electrification sector: Nouveau Monde is developing the world's first 100% electric open-pit mine.

Nouveau Monde has also made use of new provisions under the law to directly present the Matawinie project at the BAPE public hearings to engage in open and transparent consultations with all stakeholders. The company invites the public to actively participate in this democratic exercise so that the project can be thoroughly reviewed and recommendations can be issued to enhance any relevant components.

Survey sample and methodology
A telephone survey was conducted from November 29 to December 15, 2019 with a sample of 301 residents and recreational visitors in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Saint-Zénon and Saint-Guillaume-Nord. The respondents were on a list of contacts provided by ASDE Survey Sampler. Calls were made in the evening and on weekends to reach as many residents and recreational visitors as possible.

To obtain a representative sample of the study population, the survey results were weighted according to Statistics Canada data based on place of residence, sex and age. The Léger survey report is available online.

8020 Admin posted a press release Historic Commitment to Upper Matawinie in NOUVEAU MONDE GRAPHITE INC.

Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Nouveau Monde Graphite formalize their partnership

SAINT-MICHEL-DES-SAINTS, Quebec, Jan. 24, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Nouveau Monde Graphite inc. (“Nouveau Monde” or “NMG”) (TSX.V: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) strengthened their social, economic and environmental development partnership with the signing of a collaboration and benefit-sharing agreement as part of the Matawinie mining project.

From the start of the exploration work, Nouveau Monde has demonstrated a strong commitment to the community through open dialogue and an intent to maximize spinoffs for Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Upper Matawinie. The cooperation and benefit-sharing agreement is therefore based on requests expressed by local stakeholders, on sustainable development principles, and on the agreement in principle reached in August 2018.

Through this new agreement, which will cover the mine’s entire commercial operating life, Nouveau Monde will contribute up to 2% of its net cash flow after taxes to the municipality to boost community spinoffs and reinvestment. An annual advance payment of $400,000 will help the municipality prepare and upgrade, if necessary, its infrastructure prior to the start of the mine’s operating period.

Through a liaison committee, which is complementary to the monitoring committee that will be established as per the Mining Act, the municipality will also have the chance to actively participate in shaping, implementing and monitoring the mining project.

“The municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Saints is proud to have reached this collaboration and benefit-sharing agreement with NMG. We are certain that it will benefit all citizens as well as future generations,” explained Réjean Gouin, Mayor of Saint-Michel-des-Saints.

Nouveau Monde will also contribute 1% of its net cash flow after taxes to a Community Fund for the Future to help stimulate developmental projects in Upper Matawinie that have a social, economic and environmental impact. The Fund will be administered by a trust organization and will promote things such as economic sustainability and community vitality beyond the mine’s operating period.

The most generous of its kind documented in Quebec, this bilateral agreement includes concrete actions in the areas of training, employability and business opportunities for the local population; the integration of the mining project into the territory through recreation and tourism development; and collaboration mechanisms to provide short-, medium- and long-term benefits for the community.

“Since the discovery of the deposit in 2015, Nouveau Monde has taken root in Saint-Michel-des-Saints. Our team is part of the Upper Matawinie community, which is where we live and work. This is our legacy for our children and future generations,” said Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO of Nouveau Monde. “We are proud to position the Matawinie project as a springboard for social and economic development in alignment with best environmental practices and ethical and responsible governance.”

ABOUT the Municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Saints
Saint-Michel-des-Saints is a Quebec municipality in the Matawinie Regional County Municipality in Lanaudière. It has a population of nearly 2,360 inhabitants. 8020 Admin posted a press release Nouveau Monde Reaches a Major Environmental Assessment Milestone in NOUVEAU MONDE GRAPHITE INC.

The BAPE will evaluate the Matawinie project in January

SAINT-MICHEL-DES-SAINTS, Quebec, Dec. 17, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. (“Nouveau Monde” or “NMG”) (TSXV: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) announces having obtained confirmation from the Government of Quebec of the eligibility of its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) after it had been analyzed by 25 provincial ministries and bodies.

Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, asked the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement (BAPE) to form a commission of inquiry to consult the population about the Matawinie project. The Minister has set the start date of the BAPE's mandate to January 27, 2020.

Nouveau Monde had already indicated its intention to use the new provisions of the law to present its project directly at public hearings and, therefore, have open and transparent consultations with stakeholders and more efficiently advance through the process of obtaining a ministerial decree authorizing the project.

The ESIA for the Matawinie project, which was filed in April 2019, was conducted by a multidisciplinary team from SNC-Lavalin and other partners and highlights the project's benefits and impacts on its physical, biological and human environments. It includes various measures to avoid, mitigate or compensate for these impacts or to enhance the project’s benefits. Conducted per sustainable development principles, the study, as well as all related documentation and correspondence, can be consulted online or at Nouveau Monde’s head office.

Since 2015, Nouveau Monde has been interacting and working with its host milieu and stakeholders, including an Accompanying Committee and the Atikamekw community of Manawan. The comments, concerns and ideas collected during these discussions have helped reduce the project's footprint, limit the impact on the surrounding environment, and innovate particularly when it comes to issues such as tailings, land integration, and an all-electric mining model.

“We have always placed a high priority on sustainable development, respect for the region’s natural character, and the promotion of the interests of Upper Matawinie. The BAPE's review of our project will allow us to demonstrate the soundness of our approach and the seriousness of our commitment to this community, which is our community too,” said Éric Desaulniers, President and CEO, Nouveau Monde Graphite. “Responsibly developing this world-class graphite deposit will collectively enable us to support social development in the region, contribute to Quebec's economy, and propel the energy transition forward on a global scale.”

Overview of the ESIA's findings

The ESIA identified positive local socio-economic impacts on employment (over 130 new jobs during the operating period, average of 250 workers during the construction period, business opportunities for local and regional businesses, etc.). Thanks to the benefit-sharing program, the population will also enjoy additional economic spinoffs or improvements to their living environment. Many stakeholders are also looking at the project as an opportunity to diversify the economy and improve their quality of life by having services for the population be maintained and developed. These positive spinoffs are of great value, as the community is identified as disadvantaged according to the economic vitality index. The mine’s life span (26 years) will provide long-term, sustainable benefits.

Quebec not only will get direct, indirect and induced impacts from the project and its tax revenues but can also develop the graphite mining sector is a promising niche. Opportunities in this market are excellent, particularly because of expected strong growth in the market for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The project will therefore contribute to transportation electrification at the provincial, national and international level. In the context of Nouveau Monde's desire to operate an all-electric mine, the Matawinie project is making a positive contribution to the fight against climate change. The resulting technological innovation could benefit the mining sector and even other industrial sectors that need to use similar types of heavy machinery.

The Matawinie project also puts forward best practices that are intended to benefit the environment and society. These practices include managing tailings and waste rock without tailing ponds, prioritizing in-pit backfilling to limit the project's footprint on the natural environment, and gradually restoring the mining site throughout the project's period of operation.

The Matawinie project also shows NMG’s desire for territorial integration, for example, with mining operations schedules adapted to the tourism context and through a Territorial Integration Plan (TIP) prepared with a committee of community representatives.

A mining project in the territory will still have impacts of varying intensities on the physical, biological and human environment. The ESIA addresses these impacts in turn and provides additional mitigation measures to minimize them.

With these mitigation measures in place, the main impacts of the project will generally be limited and controlled in the vicinity of the mine site so that the town cores, along with the tourist and resort sites in Upper Matawinie, will be protected from the main negative impacts. For landowners on the project’s periphery (within a 1-km radius), Nouveau Monde has implemented a proactive voluntary acquisition program to prevent these landowners from being exposed to nuisances due to their proximity to the mine site. To date, agreements have been reached with all interested landowners in the area.

A technological risk analysis of the project indicates that there should be no consequences to the surrounding population or other sensitive components nearby, and that the project is adapted to climate change. Monitoring and follow-up programs will be in place to track the project's effects on the environment and ensure that any situation raised by the community is addressed.

Various initiatives for the Matawinie project aim to maximize its economic benefits and minimize its environmental and social impacts and risks. These initiatives are part of a responsible approach to social, economic and environmental performance that is increasingly valued by the public, authorities and graphite market clients, in alignment with Nouveau Monde’s values.

8020 Admin posted a press release Nouveau Monde Graphite Completes Drilling For An Upcoming Resource Update in NOUVEAU MONDE GRAPHITE INC.

SAINT-MICHEL-DES-SAINTS, Quebec, Dec. 03, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. (“Nouveau Monde” or “NMG”) (TSX.V: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) has just completed its drilling program and pre-construction preparations after more than six months of field work at its Matawinie graphite deposit.

Resource Update

A major drilling program focused at the West Zone of the Tony Block (Met-Chem feasibility study, December 2018) has just been completed. Since June 2019, 77 holes have been drilled totalling 13,350 m. The operation generated 3,928 samples that provide greater resource detail.

Bernard-Olivier Martel, P.Geo., BSc, supervised the program. A strict protocol, including the insertion of duplicate (172), blank (174) and standard graphite (84) samples within the sample stream, was adopted for quality assurance and control. The quarter core samples were then individually bagged and sent for analysis, and the remaining core was kept as a reference and for possible metallurgical testing. The samples will be analyzed for graphitic carbon (Cg) content by a LECO analyzer (ALS code; C-IR18) at the ALS Val d'Or - Geochemistry Laboratory. This laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited.

Data compilation will lead to a mineral resource estimate update for this deposit, in accordance with the provisions of National Instrument (NI) 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects, during the first quarter of 2020.

Data Collection for the Detailed Engineering Phase

This work not only has added to NMG's geological knowledge but also included the collection of geotechnical, geomechanical and hydrogeological data required for the detailed engineering of the Matawinie project. The work included drilling, trenching, sample collections, and the installation of additional on-site observation wells. The targeted areas will be used for the project's future infrastructure, such as the buildings, crusher, concentrator and industrial site, accumulation areas for the co-disposal piles, collection ponds and drainage ditches, main access road, borrow pits and the projected pit. SNC-Lavalin carried out the geotechnical and hydrogeology characterization studies, F8 Roc & Falaises Inc. profiled the geomechanical properties of the pit, and Poly-Géo Inc. collected data related to the access road and the identification of the borrow pits required for the construction. SNC-Lavalin also characterized physical and chemical properties of additional soil samples; this information will  be added to the already substantive data provided in Nouveau Monde’s environmental and social impact study.

“These field campaigns have put us in an excellent position to launch the commercial phase of our project,” explained Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO, Nouveau Monde Graphite. “Once the campaign results have been analyzed, our master team will have an in-depth portrait of the site and its mineral resources, which will be a considerable asset for us to accelerate the project’s development.”

The technical information in this news release was reviewed by Antoine Cloutier, P. Geo., chief geologist for Nouveau Monde Graphite and a Qualified Person under NI 43-101.

8020 Admin posted a press release Nouveau Monde Provides an Update on Its Strategy to Produce Spherical Graphite Destined to Lithium-ion Batteries Market in NOUVEAU MONDE GRAPHITE INC.

SAINT-MICHEL-DES-SAINTS, Québec, Nov. 12, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. (“Nouveau Monde” or “NMG”) (TSXV: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) announces the successful completion of test work and inspections of the micronization and spheronization equipment ordered for its secondary graphite transformation demonstration plant.

Equipment and Demonstration Plant

The equipment has been shipped following this validation phase, which was conducted in Asia by Nouveau Monde’s technical team. The Company expects to receive the equipment on Canadian soil at the end of Q4 2019. The equipment will be installed at the Company’s currently operating demonstration plant in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, to test the process developed by NMG for the production of value-added products (VAP) as of Q1 2020. Seneca has been awarded the engineering-procurement-construction contract for the micronization and spheronization demonstration plant.

Nouveau Monde is also developing a thermochemical purification process to complete its market offering, adding products with a purity above 99.95%. To this end, NMG has reserved an option to purchase 2 million square feet of land in the Bécancour Industrial Park in Quebec, an area with excellent development potential for the electric battery sector (KPMG, April 2019) due to the low cost of energy, availability of labour, access to logistical infrastructure and proximity to the U.S. market.

Nouveau Monde plans to build the secondary transformation plant for the production of  anode material for lithium-ion batteries at an initial capacity of 35,000 tonnes per year for the first phase, and then up to 100,000 tonnes per year, with potential supply agreements with other graphite suppliers.

Strengthening of its Technical Team

To support the implementation of this production segment, Nouveau Monde is proud to announce it has hired René Boisvert as VAP Project Manager. Mr. Boisvert is an electrical engineering graduate of Université Laval with 30 years of experience in silicon production as well as the design and construction of production units. Starting as a project engineer and site superintendent, he has moved into increasingly higher management positions over the years as Director of Technology, Vice President of Operations, and President and CEO. Mr. Boisvert has obtained several patents in the field of electrode design and silicon purification, and has presented at major conferences on electric arc furnaces and silicon.

Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO of Nouveau Monde, commented: “Our business plan is progressing well, as demonstrated by the hiring of Mr. Boisvert, a highly experienced manager, and the integrated mandate awarded to Seneca. Much more than a mining company, Nouveau Monde is positioning itself as a player in the graphite supply chain with the planned secondary transformation facility playing a significant role in our production of graphite concentrate to supply the fast-growing market for lithium-ion batteries.”

8020 Admin posted a press release Nouveau Monde Graphite Reaches a Key Milestone for the Construction of Its Commercial Plant in NOUVEAU MONDE GRAPHITE INC.

SAINT-MICHEL-DES-SAINTS, Quebec, Nov. 05, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. ("Nouveau Monde " or "NMG") (TSX.V: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) has awarded SNC-Lavalin, in partnership with Seneca and Boucher-Lachance Architects, the contract for detailed engineering and procurement services for the construction of its concentrator as part of its Matawinie graphite project.

"With an impressive track record in concentrator design, procurement and project management in Quebec, the selected firms will facilitate the commissioning of commercial operations to supply the market with high-quality graphite," said Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO of Nouveau Monde.

Engineering work is already underway to complete priority activities by the end of the fourth quarter of 2019, including the process review, a Class 2 estimate, and a risk and opportunity assessment to optimize infrastructure design and generate savings.

The entire project will be carried out in Virtual Design & Construction (VDC), enabling integrated and dynamic modelling of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) engineering for the concentrator. This innovative platform will facilitate the transfer from engineering to construction and then to operation. NMG's master team, part of the management team and composed of senior specialists with several decades of experience each, will act as experts to validate the engineering, the procurement strategy and the technical specifications for the equipment.

The engineering work will also take advantage of process optimizations identified at the demonstration plant, which has been operational for one year. With a few hundred tonnes of graphite concentrate produced to date, the operation has demonstrated exceptional ore quality and a high-performance process to achieve a graphite purity of 97% on average and up to 99% for the largest flakes.

Nouveau Monde leverages this production, which is segregated into several granulometric categories ranging from flakes of more than 0.3 millimetres (+50 mesh) to the finest products of less than 0.1 millimetres (-150 mesh), to supply potential customers with samples so they can test the concentrate and confirm their commercial intentions. The demonstration plant will also be the preferred training platform for future Nouveau Monde employees to accelerate the start-up of operations thanks to process knowledge and hands-on experience with similar equipment.

Mr. Desaulniers concluded: "Nouveau Monde’s mining project has really taken off in recent months now that we have a solid foundation for our Matawinie graphite project. Our demonstration plant has validated the effectiveness of our treatment process, which is now being optimized by our team of experts in anticipation of the commercial plant. Next year promises more achievements as we complete the design of our operation, reserve key equipment and crystallize our customer base.”

Technical information included in this press release was prepared by Eric Desaulniers, P.Geo., M.Sc., President and Chief Executive Officer of Nouveau Monde, a qualified person under National Instrument 43-101.

Throughout its history, the municipality’s economic activities have revolved around agriculture, forestry and recreational and tourism activities. The construction, transportation and warehousing, restaurant, and retail sectors have also contributed to its economic development and represent over half of the municipality’s companies.

All statements, other than statements of historical fact, contained in this press release including, but not limited to generally, or the “About Corporation Graphite” paragraph which essentially describe the Corporation’s outlook and objectives, constitute “forward-looking information” or “forward-looking statements” within the meaning of certain securities laws, and are based on expectations, estimates and projections as of the time of this press release. Forward-looking statements are necessarily based upon a number of estimates and assumptions that, while considered reasonable by the Corporation as of the time of such statements, are inherently subject to significant business, economic and competitive uncertainties and contingencies. These estimates and assumptions may prove to be incorrect.

Many of these uncertainties and contingencies can directly or indirectly affect, and could cause, actual results to differ materially from those expressed or implied in any forward-looking statements. There can be no assurance that forward-looking statements will prove to be accurate, as actual results and future events could differ materially from those anticipated in such statements. Forward-looking statements are provided for the purpose of providing information about management’s expectations and plans relating to the future. The Corporation disclaims any intention or obligation to update or revise any forward-looking statements or to explain any material difference between subsequent actual events and such forward-looking statements, except to the extent required by applicable law.
